COP28: Africa50 to advance solar and transmission projects in Mozambique

11 December 2023
  • 3 solar power projects totalling 260MW in generation capacity with state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including the first 100MW floating solar PV project to be developed in Mozambique.
  • PPP to deliver 400km of new transmission lines and associated infrastructure, which will be one of the first on the continent.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - 11 December 2023 - Africa50, the pan-African infrastructure investment platform has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), the Mozambican utility, to collaborate on transformative clean energy projects in Mozambique to close the country’s energy access gap.

The MOU sets out a framework for collaboration between Africa50 and EDM to develop three solar plants, including a floating solar plant, as well as transmission line PPP projects. The projects are designed to enable and add green generation capacity - providing safe, reliable, and more affordable clean power to where it is most needed.

Africa50 expects to develop these projects under the $4.5 billion Africa Green Investment initiative announced by the COP28 Presidency, which Africa50 was selected as a strategic partner. This initiative aims to help accelerate and scale green projects across Africa, promoting climate mitigation and adaptation, while catalyzing economic growth in Africa.

The projects include the 100MW Montepuez solar power plant in the Cabo Delgado Province and the 60MW Angoche solar power plant in the Nampula Province, which will feature a Battery Energy Storage System, as well as the 100MW floating solar photovoltaic project in the western province of Manica, which is designed to utilize the Chicamba hydropower plant reservoir’s surface for power generation.

In addition to these generation projects, Africa50 and EDM have also signed an MoU for transmission line PPPs, with an initial set of high voltage lines of close to 400km identified for development. Africa50 will bring the expertise gained in developing the first transmission PPP on the continent in Kenya, now at an advanced development stage, to enable a speedy execution of these projects. These lines are part of a green corridor, enabling the evacuation of green power to the consumption centers.

Mozambique has tremendous renewable energy potential and Africa50 is pleased to partner with the country to help turn it into concrete and impactful power projects, including pioneering floating solar technology. We look forward to joining forces with EDM to accelerate the deployment of green power infrastructure in generation as well as transmission, leveraging private sector capital and our partnership with the UAE's Africa Green Investment initiative, to deliver these significant investments in Mozambique.Alain Ebobissé, CEO of Africa50.
