Africa50 GSM 2025 - Powering Africa’s Growth: Energy & Industrialization

18 August 2025

The “Powering Africa’s Growth: Energy & Industrialization” panel at the Africa50 GSM 2025 highlighted Mozambique’s vast power generation potential and its crucial role in driving sustainable industrial transformation across the  Southern African Development Community and beyond.

Key take aways:
“The example that we've seen in Mozambique is the recognition that before you invite investors to come in and invest, ensure that you have the infrastructure plans very clearly laid out. Infrastructure allows industry to succeed in every country,” - Ms. Mmakgoshi Lekhethe, CEO, Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), South Africa.

“Oftentimes, the opportunities are there, but we are not unlocking them. There are no ready-made deals that are on the shelf. We have to pull up our sleeves and make them work, and this is why we're here at Africa50’s AGM,” - Mr. Admassu Tadesse, Group President and Managing Director, Trade and Development Bank Group.

“We need to work as a team. Government has the vision and roadmap. The private sector can help to execute this vision with financial institutions backing it up with capital,” - Ms. Pakinam Kafafi, CEO, Taqa Arabia.

“In Mozambique, we have sector reforms, commitments from the government and macroeconomic stability, which is crucial. The scale of the project is 1,500 MW which can supply Southern Africa,” - Mr. Carlos Yum, Managing Director, Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project Implementation Office (GMNK).
